We Were Liars by National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart combines mystery and romance with an unexpected twist at the end. I'm a big fan of books with unreliable narrators (think, Gone Girl), and this book did not disappoint. Cady comes from a long line of well-to-do Sinclairs who live a beautiful and distinguished life of elegance and comfort. They summer on a private island off the coast of Cape Cod, and that is where our story begins. Cady and her cousins and friends love to gather each year for a summer of fun and adventure, but Cady has had to miss two years of these gatherings because of a mysterious illness. She suffers from migraine headaches everyone treats her as thought she must be sheltered and babied. No one will tell her what happened to cause her to become so seriously ill, so Cady must discover the truth for herself.
